The Great Divide

The subject of my painting ‘The Great Divide’ is The Band who produced probably my favourite album of the late 1960s/early 1970s, eponymously entitled ‘The Band’ (aka ‘the Brown Album’ )

This record has all the magic of the ‘old weird America’ (as described in the book ‘Invisible Republic’ by Greil Marcus ) seamlessly incorporated into 12 original songs that sound like they were written a century earlier.

I never tire of listening to it.

Captain Tom

Congratulations to the marvellous Captain Tom Moore who, at time of writing, has raised £28 million for the NHS. Loving that great and inspiring things can happen in the most dire of circumstances.

Thanks to Captain Tom.

The late John Prine Blues

Been thinking about John Prine today, who very sadly was a victim of Covid-19 last week.

He wrote songs that could be sad, funny, profound and surreal, all at the same time. Good music for our current times perhaps.

Thank you so much Mr. Prine.

Pink Moon

Painting the ‘Pink Moon’ yesterday for the 'Michael Harding Giveaway: painting in an odd situation competition’.

Nothing remarkable for me about the location, especially in our current isolated situation but ‘plein air la nuit’ is definitely a new one for me.

Age of Endeavour

Went to ‘The Age of Endeavour ‘at Bonhams; a fascinating exhibition of 100 artefacts to celebrate 100 years of the Racing Bentley, all chosen from the collection of Ian Andrews.
Many thanks to Benjafield’s Racing Club and to Sholto Gilbertson of Bonhams for the invitation.
